The Boomerang Effect – Why You Don’t Always Get What You Want – Part 3

In post one of this series, we considered ‘throwing a boomerang’ as a metaphor for the concept of using your thoughts and intentions to affect your experience of life. The lesson from that post was to align with the prevailing winds of your life before attempting to throw your thoughts around.

In post two, we studied the two primary techniques for learning how to throw a boomerang. Which, when transitioned to the concept of using intention and thoughts to your benefit, requires an understanding of the design of the boomerang (crafting your thoughts) and the specific technique for throwing one properly (practicing again and again).

In part 3 we now get to the interesting part…catching the boomerang!

Since we’re using the metaphor of throwing and catching a boomerang to represent ‘affecting your life through the power of thought and intention’, most people are only interested in this third piece of the puzzle.

“Where is my stuff?”

This, unfortunately, is where most people invest the bulk of their time and energy. I say ‘unfortunately’ because if you haven’t practiced the first set of skills (personal clarity, alignment and practicing how to project your thoughts properly) you will have a VERY difficult time catching anything!

A girlfriend of mine is a member of an actual ‘intention group’, where they meet weekly to discuss their intentions and how they are able, or unable, to manifest change in their lives. I think it’s a brilliant idea, but her experience has been both positive and negative.

It seems there is one member who spends the entire meeting talking about her inability to create stuff. Yes, the group provides a platform for open discussion, but her commentary is self-centered. She always complains about how she “never can manifest anything”, and “it’s taking so long, what am I doing wrong?”

Well, it’s obvious to me! Her focus is not on what she wants as her experience, instead her focus and intention is on what is not her experience. In my upcoming book, I spend a lot of time describing exactly how to focus with intention, and she has the rules of the game mixed up. She’s trying to throw the boomerang like a Frisbee!

What’s interesting, is this same woman expects to manifest stuff into her life through thoughts alone, and refuses to take any physical action because all the gurus teaching in this space say it’s simply a matter of ‘acceptance’.

That maybe so for others, but in my experience working with the tools of intention and focused thought, action has always been part of the game too! This is the primary lesson for today.

How to best catch a boomerang…

The indigenous aboriginals know the flight of a boomerang is affected by many factors.

We’ve identified alignment and technique as two skills to perfect, but no matter how experienced you are with aligning and throwing, there is a 99% chance it won’t return to exactly where you are standing. You will have to take a step or two.

And the reality is, it’s not simply a step to catch it, but more like a running jump to grab the weapon as it speeds towards your general vicinity.

Bringing this metaphor back to using your thoughts to affect your experience of life, you need to consider two options:

Take Action

Do Not Take Action

If you’ve ever seen the second Mad Max movie, you might recall the narrator is actually the little feral boy who uses a metal boomerang as a lethal weapon (pun intended), and has a special glove to catch it.

You might also recall that at one point in the movie, one of the bad guys is attacked by the boy.

He ducks, but his partner is killed, and in a rage he throws the boomerang back at the boy, who likewise ducks out of the way. Since the boomerang missed its original target, it begins the inevitable, elliptical return. Another of the bad guys tries to catch it, and his fingers get chopped off because the blade is razor sharp. You can view that scene in the movie here, but fair warning – it is violent.

This is a good example of an opportunity to catch a boomerang, which was better left unactioned.

Once you start throwing your well crafted thoughts around, you’ll receive all kinds of opportunities. Some of these will be in alignment with your primary focus, but others won’t. When trying to catch a boomerang coming at you, there are many factors to consider.

Each throw, or the sending of mental energy in the form of intention, will bring about opportunities to take action or not. It is the wise person who can properly determine when to take action and when to avoid action.

To Review…

The first post explained that ‘achieving a specific goal’ will take more than one mental throw. In fact, it may take many throws to bring about the specific outcome you want to achieve.

You will rarely throw a real boomerang, then stand perfectly still to catch it. Likewise, you will rarely use your thoughts and intention to manifest something in your life, without taking some sort of action. When an opportunity comes into your experience, you have to first recognize it, then immediately decide if it should be actioned or not.

This is why so many people fail. It’s pretty easy to find alignment in your life through some serious internal conversations. It’s also pretty easy to craft a thought and throw it out there. But it is extraordinarily difficult to use thought energy to affect your physical experience of life, so most people give up.

If you’re going to learn how to throw a boomerang, or build a website, or write a book, or play tennis, or speak French…it’s gonna take effort, tenacity and perseverance. That’s not what people want to hear these days. Everyone has instant access to everything today, so why not instant access to the power of the mind?

Well, just like tennis, French or throwing a boomerang, learning how to affect your experience of life is a skill which takes time, practice and belief.

So my hope is every time you see a boomerang you’ll remember this short series of posts.

Remember to first align with who you are, then craft your thoughts and practice throwing them again and again. Lastly, be aware of your surroundings. Look for opportunities to take action and situations to avoid.

When it is time to take action, do so with your full intention to succeed. When it is time to avoid a situation, do not give any mental energy to it; remove it from your mind.

Align. Focus. Throw. Act.

It is a simple yet powerful philosophy.

The Rolling Stones must have thrown a few boomerangs…”You can’t always get what you want…but if you try some time, you just might find…you get what you need.”

I look forward to your comments!

Write On!

<a [...]</itunes:summary>

The Boomerang Effect – Part 2

In the previous post we considered ‘throwing a boomerang’ as a metaphor for using your thoughts to affect your experience of life. The lesson was to align with the prevailing winds before attempting any throw.

So now you’re aligned with the winds of your life, and you have a very clear picture of what you want to achieve, let’s go back to learning how to throw a boomerang.

Again, if you’ve never thrown one, you’d be surprised at how difficult it can be. How a race of people, described as one of, if not THE oldest cultures in the world, who have roamed across Australia for the past 60,000 years, figured out the aerodynamics of a wing, is amazing and credit to them!

The reality is, if you know how to throw one, it will come back to you!

There are two aspects, of the actual throwing of the weapon, to learn. One is technique and the other is the design of the tool itself. You must practice the physical throwing of the boomerang, but you must also understand how it is crafted.

Transition this back to your thoughts and intentions, and using them to assist you in your life, you will find it’s the exact same thing…

Yes, you must know the technique for throwing your thoughts and intentions out there, but they must be well crafted before they leave your mind! So what is a well crafted thought?

The answer is in the previous post. To craft a thought worth throwing, it must align with who you are and what you want to become. Once you’ve conducted a serious self analysis, these well crafted thoughts should result.

Step Two – Technique

Now we get to the technique required to make a boomerang come back to you.

If you handed a real boomerang to the average non-Australian, and asked them to throw it without any instruction, they usually try to throw it one of two ways:

They hold it backwards and flick it like a Frisbee.

They hold it correctly and throw it fine, but they don’t have the finesse of the wrist and arm to create the required spin and arc for it to return.

Again, bringing the metaphor back to using thoughts and intention to affect your life, most people have two main challenges:

They simply don’t believe this stuff works because consciousness cannot exist outside the skull.

They do believe consciousness is real, but they just don’t understand how to access their individual ability properly, so they stumble in their attempts.

A very simple technique I utilize is Repetition.

Many schools of thought believe it is appropriate, when attempting to have an effect on your experience of life with your mind, to create a very physical and emotional image, including any sounds, smells, emotional feelings, etc, and focus on it intently for a period of time. You’re then instructed to ‘release’ that thought to the universe and let whatever happens happen.

This has never worked for me….

What has worked for me is a repetitive and continuous focus on the outcome I want to achieve. Spending the past two years, researching and writing the book I’m about to publish, has only succeeded because once the idea was conceived, something bigger than myself took control and is working the magic for me daily.

The second lesson is: look within yourself (align with the wind), craft your thoughts, and practice throwing them as many times a day as you can.

Practice and Patience

My experience with this technique is working for me, but it has taken years of practice. Do not judge your ability to throw a boomerang after the first 100 throws, for you will fail 100 times. After 1000 throws you might achieve a single return…that’s when the realization will kick in and motivate you to throw 1000 more times!

If you understand the metaphor, you will also understand the patience required to learn how to affect your experience of life with your intentions. You will try 100 times and you’ll fail 100 times, but after 1000 attempts, you will notice something amazing start to happen.

So get out there and start throwing!!!

In Part 3 we’ll consider the most difficult part….catching the boomerang.

Just like boomerangs, people throw their thoughts and desires out to the universe, few ever return or show up in their lives as real things or experiences…why?

The Boomerang Effect

As I’m about to publish a book which focuses on using intention to affect your experience of life, I spend a lot of time researching, writing and thinking about intention; particularly my own.

The ”Boomerang Effect’ came to me as a better description of the concept of the ‘law of attraction’ currently promoted by a number of self help gurus.

It’s a metaphor…throwing a boomerang represents thinking with focused intention.

As an American living in Australia for the past 9 years, I’ve had a number of opportunities to throw a boomerang. The results were mixed at best. Have you ever thrown one?

If so, you’d probably agree it’s much more difficult than you might first expect. Throwing is one thing, but getting it to come back is the real challenge! If you don’t know what you are doing, it is not something that comes naturally.

Now this also seems to be the case when we talk about the ‘law of attraction’. How often do you put your thoughts or intentions out to the universe? And how often have you been successful in affecting your experience of life, such that you knew you attracted a specific outcome to you?

Just like boomerangs, lots of people throw their thoughts and desires out to the universe, but few ever return or show up in their lives as real things or experiences…why?

Step One – Winds of Change

I returned to America several years ago, and brought my nephew a real throwing boomerang (versus just a display piece to put on the mantle) as a gift. Of course as soon as he unwrapped it, he smiled a wicked smile, and asked if we could throw it?

So off we went to the front yard, where I attempted to show him the basics of throwing a boomerang. For him it was all about geting it to come back, so I tried to be wise and teach him the technique…my very first throw sent it spinning on a beautiful arc, but the wind gusted and blew it straight into a tree. It got stuck there, so we had to use an extension ladder to get it down.

This is the first lesson hidden in the metaphor…if you want a boomerang to return, you HAVE to align with the wind!

This is also the first lesson to take onboard with regards to affecting your experience of life. You have to align with the situation around you, before using intention for a specific outcome. OK, so how does that work?

First, stop and focus on what you truly want as an outcome. This means aligning with the winds of your life. Who you are right now? Where you are in life? How do you plan to achieve your goals?

This requires an intense, personal analysis and planning session to be undertaken.

Who are you and where do you want to go?

If you were recently layed off from a blue collar job, but dreaming of a white collar job, you’re probably not aligning with the winds of life. I’m not suggesting to think small, but I am suggesting to think in a series of steps. Ok, so you have blue collar experience, but you want a white collar job…what are the steps required to achieve that goal?

The first step would be to go back to school and gain the skills required to make the next step on the journey. If you don’t have the money for school, then borrow it; that’s what I did. The second step: look for an entry position. The third step: do the absolute best job you can, so you stand out from the other employees…on and on the process goes until you achieve the corporate position you desired.

In this scenario, the ultimate result is experienced after a series of throws. Too many people are too caught up in instant gratification, and be assured that after throwing a real boomerang once or twice, you’ll learn that patience and practice is required to develop this skill.

So, if you want the boomerang to return, you MUST first align yourself with the prevailing winds! If you don’t pay attention to the winds around you, there’s a good chance your thoughts will end up in a tree somewhere…

What does this have anything to do with not always getting what you want?

Come back tomorrow for part 2…

	<itunes:summary>

[...]</itunes:summary>

“…Hence, the amazing architecture and elegant engineering feats still standing in places like Bath, England, are metaphors for the subtle but solid control required to build, maintain, and grow an Empire able to stand for centuries.

The Roman Augers (city planners) were in possession of ancient knowledge of the energies of the planet. Before any building was undertaken, secret ceremonies were conducted to determine whether the plans were in alignment with the many universal forces guiding the evolution of the empire.

Know you’re the auger of your empire, so plan carefully with much self-consultation in alignment with the universal forces, and create for the long-term. As my journey continues, I reduce more of the behaviour which does not serve me, and expand more of that behaviour which does.

In the case of Rome, every expansion, stagnation or contraction was caused by the individual Caesar who ruled. Some were brilliant military masterminds, others were debaucherous sodomists and at least one or two were simple idiots.

The empire was the body; each Caesar was the head.

The conjoining of the two produced the soul of the Republic.

The spirit of the Republic, however, evolved from ruler to ruler.

Using this analogy you can now see the esoteric meaning of the phrase. It indeed refers to the multiplicity of Caesars we will encounter on our internal empire building expedition.

Each of our emotions represents only one of the various internal Caesars we might encounter on any given day or at any given moment…”
