Stop And Smell The Roses – Symbols in Our Collective Unconscious

“On a deeper level of investigation into this phrase, why is the primary reference to ‘smelling a rose’? Or why smelling a flower at all? Why not stop and eat a grape? Or stop and watch the sunset?

The rose is a symbol recognised at the deepest level of our mind. Carl Jung classified it as a fundamental symbol of the ‘Collective Unconscious’, which refers to that part of ourselves which we share with everyone else.  Thus it a symbol we all immediately recognize as providing a sense of beauty and perfection.”

The symmetry of its blooms has been an inspiration for artists, sculptures and writers over the centuries as they try to express or recreate the effect it has on our psyche.

The plant itself varies by its blooms and styles of growth, but its very essence is indeed cyclical. The bud’s continuous birth, bloom, death and rebirth represent the cycles of life.

It also symbolises our ability to regrow. We can rejuvenate a reckless, angry or saddened life, by ‘trimming’ or removing the focus on the anger and sadness in our lives, and redirecting our focus on personal growth and positive living.

Rose’s thrive on proper feeding and trimming and we will also prosper with proper maintenance.”
