Robert Langdon is resurrected in Dan Brown’s latest novel
While the book offers the same fast-paced, exciting content as the previous two in this series, it uses a prefabricated framework for the storyline, which is a bit stale.
This includes the stereotypical last minute invitation Robert can’t refuse, a mentally twisted antagonist, a good-cop/bad-cop scenario where you’re not sure if the investigators are in on the antagonist’s plan, cutting-edge science, a dark-haired female companion and the potential of a major catastrophy should the antagonist achieve his goal.
For anyone interested in Freemasonry, ancient symbolism, American history, Washington DC and the latest in neuroscience experimentation, this is a great read!
The book does provide some tremendous twists and surprises for the reader and keeps you guessing from page to page. There is some explicit violence but no more than the previous story lines.
Some of the American history explained, regarding the founding fathers George Washington and Benjamin Franklin, is not what you find taught in grade school history books.
Many Americans will be surprised to learn about the mystical beliefs held by these men (both Freemasons), as well as the art work and architecture they commissioned.
Obviously there is some creative license at play, so readers must do their own research.
If you have not yet read either of the books in the series (Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code) you can read this as a stand alone novel without having to read the other two before hand.
I enjoyed the book immensely and highly recommend it if you are a fan of Dan Brown.
