Double the Traffic to Your Blog - SEO Is Only Half the Battle

If you blog, and you have not yet set-up a Google Analytics Account, then click here to get started immediately!

The Analytics tool allows you to monitor the activity on your blog or website, and slice and dice that information in many different ways.

As an example, in the past 30 days I have had 169 visits to the blog with 118 visitors being ‘unique’ (never visited the site from that specific IP address) from a total of 22 sources.

The sources always interest me as it shows which of my ‘marketing’ activities are making a difference, and I’ve found that SEO (search engine optimisation) is only half the battle!

The 22 sources are composed of 4 search engines (google, bing, aol and yahoo) while the other 18 sources are all various blogging groups I have joined or from posts I’ve made on other blogs.

74 visitors (43%) came from the 4 search engines while 72 vistiors (42%) came from the 18 ‘other’ sources.

Google was the biggest contributor of new vistors, from any source by a huge margin, so SEO is definitely important, but it is not the only thing to consider.

If you read anything about increasing traffic to your site, you will soon find advice on joining blog groups, or blog carnivals, or to go visit sites in your same genre and enage with those communities.

This has clearly been working for me as you can see from the numbers above, so if you want to double the traffic to your blog or website, you’ll have to invest some time in finding like-minded communities and looking for as many ways to promote yourself and blog as possible.

Where do you start?

You can begin by reading other blogs, leave comments on appplicable posts and find blogging communities to join.

I mentioned a couple of blogger sites in a previous post, so start there and it shouldn’t take you long to get results which mirror what I’ve shared with you today.

A last piece of advice is to make this an on-going effort. As you peruse the net in search of appropriate material, you’ll see the 1000’s of abandoned blogs out there, so don’t fall into the trap of “i’m not going to blog if no one is going to read it”.

If your content is good, and you believe in what you are saying, then you will find an audience. The key here is YOU have to do the finding….don’t wait for them to find you!
