The Grass is Always Greener Cont’d…
I’ve just purchased my first apartment in Brisbane, Australia! But, despite having the unit inspected prior to purchase, I moved in to find both the shower and toilet were leaking quite badly.
There literally was a stream of water running from behind the toilet, along the grout lines, into the drain. I was very frustrated, and rang both the building inspection company and body corporate to inquire about insurance to cover the cost of repairs
I learned the inspection company took no responsibility for ‘plumbing fixtures’ and the body corporate insurance only covered external repairs. So, every time I went into the bathroom I was irritated by the problematic situation, and kept thinking about the 100’s of dollars in repairs I would incur.
After stopping, and realising I was focusing only on what I didn’t have (a dry bathroom), I decided instead to take action.
With over 10 years of apartment maintenance experience, I knew I could fix the fixtures myself. However, the design of plumbing fixtures is different in Australia compared to the US, so I was always intimidated by the difference. Putting the intimidation, and a focus on what I didn’t have aside, I rolled up my sleeves, broke out my tools and went to work.
Three trips to the hardware store later, the leaks were eradicated! And as you can imagine I felt like Tarzan conquering the wild, leaking beast.
So, I moved from a mental position of being put upon and not having a working bathroom, to a position of empowerment and new knowledge.
The grass is always greener as long as you don’t appreciate what you do have. This realization is crucial! Remove your fears, and focus on what you do have.
Use it to the utmost of your ability and you just might be surprised what comes into your experience!
