Newbie Blogger Mistake #3

Ok, so your site is designed, your domain names are sorted and you now want to start doing some cool blogging and set up your search engine optimization (SEO), so the world can find you.

You might go find an SEO plug-in online (if using a hosted blog site), and after installing it, you get a pop-up message with some html code that has to be put into a specific place on the page, or needs to be uploaded to a specific folder on the root directory. You read the following, “this html code must be inserted in the header tag before the body”, and you go blank…

shakespearean tragedyWhat the heck are they talking about? I have no idea where to put in html code, let alone find the header tag???

This was my third mistake.

Even if you are a casual blogger, you will need to understand basic html and the file structure of sites and hosting servers, unless you want to spend hours searching for how to do this and that, every time some code is required to be inserted.

Mistake #3 – Do not start blogging without a fairly good understanding of html coding, the basic structure of a website (header, body, etc) and a good understanding of file structures on the hosting servers.

Depending on the learning style most appropriate for you, there are several options to get acquainted with this stuff:

1. Take a Course – You can use a company like mine, www.itts.com.au, where all we do is train people in IT. I’m sure there would be at least one training company in your city that offers courses on these skills. Though I will add SEO courses are not commonly available in Australia, and I am currently developing one.

2. Get Tutored Lessons – Instead of spending a day or two in a course, find a tutor who can spend a couple of hours with you, maybe two or three times so you can learn from someone with experience, and practice in between sessions, so you can get feedback on your efforts. This is what I did.

3. Access E-learning - If you are self-motivated and can follow a lab driven experience with a voice over instructor, then e-learning courses are cheap and many offer access for up to 12 months.

4. Outsource It – If you have cash, then there are many companies offering services for managing your site on your behalf. Click here for a listing of over 400 UK companies…

5. Self Study – After some tutoring sessions, or with some focused searches online, you’ll find everything you could ever think to learn about blogging; except what ever the next BIG blogging thing is, so be creative and contribute! Start here with google webmaster tools.
