Daily Review and Renew – How to Renew Your Connection with Others

hourglass angleA great way to begin is to force yourself to take a few minutes at the end of each day, to review all of the various interactions you’ve experienced in the past twelve hours.

Most people spend a large amount of their time in the workplace. This is where many recurring and defining experiences occur; both good and bad.

Having held a number of management positions during my lifetime, I’ve managed hundreds of people – though mismanaged may be a better description of my activities for much of that time!

Early in my management career, I had no idea about controlling my emotional or verbal reactions.

If an employee or a superior responded differently than I expected in a given situation, my over-reactive thoughts and words often created emotionally charged situations which usually were extremely unproductive and unprofessional.

When my emotional triggers were set-off, these vicious over-reactions occurred before I even knew what was happening. Before learning that my reactive thoughts and words were actually the result of emotional triggers buried deep within my neural net, I never understood why I was so hyper-sensitive in specific situations.

Activating the Objective Observer

A desire for personal growth and self improvement has always driven me to become a better manager, so I began to take time each night to review these reactive experiences and interactions.

meditate on deskSometimes my reactions were justified, while at other times I was simply ashamed of those reactions.  If I truly felt I had wronged someone, I made an immediate effort the next morning to pull them aside and apologize.

People’s reactions to my confessions often surprised me.  Some would say, “I didn’t even give it a second thought, so don’t worry about it.”

Others might reply, “Thank you, I really appreciate that because I thought you were being a bit rude.”

And still others agreed, “You know I thought about that too, and wanted to come and talk to you about it, but didn’t quite know how to approach you, so thank you for being so honest with me.”

In all three cases, the relationship I forged at that moment brought a better work experience to me in the future.

You can do the same thing.  You might not be able to step in and control your reactions at this point, but you can reach out and fix any negative situations resulting from your uncontrollable outward “reactions”.
