What is proto-consciousness?
In a previous post I compared the philosophies of idealism versus materialism and provided some examples of what the extreme views of theses philosophies suggest as the truth about human consciousness.
In this post, I’d like to explore the concept of proto-consciousness.
This philosophy assumes that consciousness is a fundemental part of the universe just like matter and velocity. It has has always existed and we each have our own individual consciousness as part of this larger collective consciousness.
The concept of proto-consciousness also assumes that every living thing is also a part of this consciousness, but each living thing has varying levels of self-consciousness.
In this scenario, a rock has less consciousness than a tree, which has less consciousness than animal, which has less consciousness than a human being, but we are all part of the same larger ‘proto-consciousness’.
If you’ve seen the movie Avatar, you’ll understand the concept of proto-consciousness used in a spiritual way…also known as pantheism.
Please see my post about the pantheism displayed in Avatar. If you haven’t seen the movie, the idea proposed is that there is a universal spirit of which we are all a part. Each one of us are connected, via this universal spirit, to everything else in our world and universe.
Akashic Record
Western mysticism describes a concept known as the Akashic Record.
The Akashic Record contains the essence of all knowledge from the beginning of time. Every action you’ve ever taken and every decision ever you’ve made, is recorded in the Akashic record and can be accessed if you have the ability to transcend your physical experience of life on Earth.
Who’s Got it Right?
- So, a materialist believes consciousness is simply a by-product of neurones firing in your brain.
- An idealist believes we are the creators of our reality and everything we know as reality outside of our mind is a hologram.
- A proponent of proto-consciousness believes there is no separation between my consciousness and yours; we are both part of a single universal consciousness.
The question is what do you believe?
