Idealism Versus Materialism – What Do You Think?
From a philosophical point of view, there are two opposing concepts which describe our interaction with the world around us. These contradictive philosophies are materialism and idealism.
A materialist believes there is no such thing as human consciousness. Extreme proponents of this theory suggest that our brain is simply a few pounds of flesh, with lots of electrical activity occurring within it, and our sense of self is simply a by-product of these electrical impulses.
Materialists believe our experience of reality is the result of millions of neurones frantically firing, and there is no connection between matter and mind. They go even further to say that one day they’ll be able to prove there is no such thing as free will, as every decision we make is already pre-determined by this electrical activity.
Idealism takes the opposite view, and proposes that what we experience as physical reality is a result of the mind. Extreme proponents of idealism declare our total experience of life is based on a hologram-type scenario, where the mind creates everything around you.
The extremist view of idealism infers you have your reality, and I have my reality, but neither of us can prove each other’s realities are valid or true…
My beliefs certainly align with idealism. When you consider the millions of dollars spent every year on communications skills training, it should be obvious that despite sharing the same living space in the universe, we do not necessarliy speak the same language, even if we are using the same alphabet!
We each have our own perception of reality. This is why science, for the past 3oo years, has been obsessed with the idea of proving things happen a certain way everytime. This is because even the most rigid laws are sometimes confounded by effects we cannot explain.
We do indeed have an effect on what we experience as reality. In my books, I take this concept a step further and attempt to prove to you just how powerful your mind actually is!
There is no doubt my thoughts and words have an effect on my experience of reality. Why?
Because I’ve spent the last four years researching and applying this concept to my life!
The positive changes I’ve experienced in my emotional reactions, my relationships and my sense of contentment, despite a continuous barrage of challenges, are proof enough.
The ability to have an affect on my experience grows daily, as my belief (see ‘The Placebo Effect’ post) in this capability is reconfirmed each time I experience the improved results in my life.
It Takes Time and Practice!
You can begin by focusing your thoughts on a single preferred outcome for periods of time longer than a couple of seconds. In fact, in as little as 8 seconds, you can begin to rewire your mental circuitry!
When you do step outside yourself, and begin to analyze how quickly your mind races from subject to subject, you’ll realize just how much of your mental energy is absolutely wasted!
Don’t waste another thought! Focus only on what you want to experience and nothing else…
