  • Some of the pioneers of quantum physics were either true mystics themselves or supported mysticism. Among them were Heisenberg, Schroedinger, de Broglie, Jeans, Planck, and Pauli. Albert Einstein, who was not a mystic, said “…most beautiful and profound emotion we can experience is the sensation of the mystical. It is the sower of all true science. To know that what is impenetrable to us really exists, manifesting itself as the highest wisdom and most radiant beauty – which our dull faculties can comprehend only in their primitive form – this knowledge, this feeling is at the center of all religion.”

  • Uncertainty seems to be the only thing certain in this life. I forgot to mention Arthur Eddington, the eminent British physicist who was a Quaker mystic. Ironically, the person who introduced me to mysticism was Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, when we met at the University of Chicago’s Yerkes Observatory. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics in 1983; he would have received it decades earlier were it not for Eddington’s opposition to Chandra’s theory on the formation of White Dwarfs. While mystics might agree spiritually, they may not do so rationally.
