Here we are, 26 days into the new decade, and I bet there are few of you who have either conveniently slipped off the wagon or haven’t quite started that “50 sit-ups per day” routine that you promised yourself. Here are the 3 reasons why New Year’s resolutions don’t work and 3 ways to feel better about it.
So why do we make these silly New Years promises to ourselves, then give up or forget about them so easily?
There are 3 primary reasons why these resolution-type personal changes rarely stick:
- You made the decision to change without any real thought or intention
- You are focusing on what you don’t like about yourself
- You start out on track, then the motivation dies out
If you fall into category number one, then there is an easy way to avoid any associated guilt…don’t make resolutions period. It’s an absolute waste of mental effort to think about making a change and then doing nothing about it.
If, like most of us in category number 2, your resolution was to give something up or fix something you don’t like about yourself, then it’s easy to understand why you both failed, and feel bad about it. You’re in a negative mindset. Instead of concentrating on those things about yourself you don’t like, focus instead on those things you want to bring into your life.
Don’t focus on losing 10 pounds by the end of January, instead focus on walking 5 nights a week in January. Don’t focus on reducing the debt you built up at Christmas, focus on how to build a second income. You will have much more personal success if focus on success instead of failure.
Make a New Year’s ‘evolution’ instead of a ‘resolution”!
If you fall into the third camp, and you’re pretty good about getting things started, but just can’t keep up the motivation, then you might be hanging out with the wrong crowd.
There was a great post on copy blogger about this and it quotes Anthony Robbins:
“Love your family and friends. But choose your peer group.”
Often it’s a lack of support by those surrounding you who promote your to failure. If you’re trying to quit smoking, yet all your friends keep telling you how you’ll never give them up, then maybe you should find new friends. If you want to start a blog in your spare time, to make some money on the side, but your partner complains you don’t spend enough time together as it is, then the blog is bound to fail.
Surround yourself with like-minded people who also want to improve themselves and you’ll enjoy a much higher rate of success and motivation…they feed on each other!
So to wrap up, don’t make empty promises to yourself or anyone else…it’s a waste of time. Stay focused on the positive ‘evolutions’ not the negative ‘resolutions’, and lastly find like-minded people who share your passion and commitment to personal change!
