After finishing yesterday’s post, I decided to have a look at some of the keywords which bring people to my site in Google Analytics. I check various stats daily, but hadn’t looked at the keyword report in 2 days.
I was amazed to see ‘reading between the lines’ as one of my highest ranked search words. Now you may find it odd that I was amazed, due to the fact that it’s both the title of my blog and my upcoming book, but the reality is there are a lot of references to this phrase on Google. In fact as of today there are 42.8 million!
I recall after having the blog live for about two weeks, I searched this phrase and told myself ‘you’re going to keep clicking until you’ve found your site”…I quit after page 40. Two months later I did the same thing, and finally find a link from my site on page 26. In November last year I found myself on page 8, and finally, six months into the blog, I find myself on page 1!
So let’s put this into perspective and give you a framework for the number 42.8 million on Google.
After doing some very basic searches I found the total number of searched per word or phrase (I live in Australia, so there are probably some IP considerations; your search results may vary):
‘Sex and the City’ = 126 million
‘Texas Hold em Poker’ = 56 million
‘The Meaning of Life’ = 90 Million
‘My Horoscope’ = 23 million
‘The Vatican’ = 21.8 million
‘Avatar’ = 591 million
Considering the variety of search words used for comparison, the number 42.8 million is a respectable number. And that is the FIRST reason it took me so long to get my main blog page on page one of a Google search…I chose a very well indexed phrase, which had a long way to go for page one status, as my title!
Yes, I’ve had heaps of posts indexed and have seen one of my posts get indexed to the first page in as little as 12 hours, BUT that was due to the low number of indexed searches on that particular keyword phrase.
I set myself a challenging task by using this cliché as the title for the blog and book, if I wanted to have my site show on the first page of a Google search. Almost exactly 6 months to the day, and 116 posts later, I achieved that goal!
The SECOND reason I believe it took me this long was my use of keywords, or more distinctly described, my lack of understanding them during my first three months of blogging. Of course I used keywords, but I didn’t understand long tail keywords (please view my post on this subject) and used a lot of single word keywords… big mistake!
It doesn’t really matter how long it took, because I’m in this for the long haul. There are a few more books, and at least a 100 more posts in me…since the site is now #2 out of 42.8 million, my new goal is to be at top of the tree…only one more link to jump!
