How to Use Leading Representational Biases Effectively

Ok, in the previous post the challenge was to identify what type of leading representational bias a person has, by understanding that how they speak and write can be key indicators of their bias type.

So, we consider the same two emails you received below, except this time I’ve bolded the give-away words:

1. “Hi Curtis, thanks for your time today, I share your vision regarding the proposed project we spoke about, and I really look forward to seeing you next Wednesday at 10am.”

OR

2. “Hi Curtis, thank you for spending a few moments with me today, I have a good feeling about working together on the project we discussed.  I hope we can get together next week as planned.”

So, it should be obvious the first email was sent by a visual person and the second is from a kinesthetic person.  As stated in the previous post, the power comes into play when you can step outside yourself and become aware of this interesting aspect of our psyche; then respond appropriately!

How do you reply to assure an instant connection with each type of person?

An easy way to work with this concept is simply to mirror their terminology.  So in our example above, you reply that you too ‘look forward to’ or want to ‘get together at’ the next meeting.

But for the more creative of you, try to find other words which match a person’s speech and writing patterns, and incorporate them into your response.  It can become a game!

You will not get the instant, sub-conscious connection if you choose mis-matched words in your reply.  The true realization here is you have to be the one to make the changes to your bias before you will achieve dramatic results.  But it’s not that difficult.

What it will do, is help you to better communicate.  If you communicate better, your experience of life will improve, because you will begin to listen and respond with thoughtful purpose instead of habitual reactions.

Know your bias and you’ll better know yourself…

Write on!

remember that you can use your style of speech, your gestures and even the way you use your eyes to build rapport. People will often move through modes of thinking rather than, for example, just being a ‘visual person’, and if you can follow them and perhaps even start to lead them, it’s amazing what shows up!

you are absolutely correct! Leading Bias is only one tiny aspect or behavioural analysis, and as you touched on is not a complete analysis, but you have to start somehere!
