Why Are Horoscopes So Important To Us?
Born on October 22, my birthday falls on the cusp between Libra and Scorpio. A previous post about being born on a cusp is one of the most visited on my blog to date.
Any self respecting newspaper has a horoscope in the ‘lifestyle’ section and anyone (including myself) can have their horoscope sent to them daily via email; while a quick search on Google shows 39 million potential links.
Why are we so fascinated by how the stars and planets can affect our experience of life?
Modern Christianity teaches that the casting of horoscopes is the work of the devil…I found this quote on the Vatican website regarding ‘Divination and Magic’:
“God can reveal the future to his prophets or to other saints. Still, a sound Christian attitude consists in putting oneself confidently into the hands of Providence for whatever concerns the future, and giving up all unhealthy curiosity about it. Improvidence, however, can constitute a lack of responsibility.
All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to “unveil” the future.48 Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone.”
So despite the fact that the church has spent centuries condemning the concept of looking into the future for answers, it still pervades many belief systems.
On the other hand, a lot of people think it is bunk! Why the fascination followed by conjecture?
Yes it’s true there are 12 constellations which make up what we call the elliptic, or the twinkling stars we see revolving through the sky at night.
Yes the moon, due to its fast rotation around the Earth, passes through each of these constellations every two hours, and the Earth itself rotates through each constellation about every 2580 years.
This is known as the Precession of the Elliptic and, due to a weird wobble of the Earth caused by its angled spin and the gravity of the other planets, seems to rotate backwards across the night sky.
You have probably heard about the movie December 21st, 2012 and the Mayan calendar ending on that date. If not, read this previous post. Many people believe this movement through the constellations can bring violent, planetary disruptions while others expect a golden age to begin.
The Earth is now leaving the constellation Pisces and entering the constellation of Aquarius (hence the song, “This is the Dawning of the Age of Aquarius”).
What effect can the movement of other planets have on us?
Well, the moon moves our mighty oceans every 12 hours due to its rotation around our planet, so it certainly has a real gravitational effect on our world, but what about the other planets?
If we consider the Sun and the awesome amount of energy it provides us in the waves of heat, light and particles of matter, again it begs the question, “How can it NOT have an effect on us?”
Our lovely home planet is assumed to be approximately 4.5 billion years old, and the Earth has been spinning on its axis as part of our galaxy for a long time. We, as creatures of this planet, have evolved to a point of having individual consciousness and the freedom to choose what we believe or do not believe.
Do you really think you can exist as a child of the stars without them having an effect on you? The calcium in our bones and iron in our blood is the same as the particles of calcium and iron carried to us by the sun…we are simply star dust.
Reading your horoscope in the daily paper or email might be a giggle, but it won’t move an ocean. The Moon does! So how can you use this information to your benefit? Learn about the forces of the universe and be open to other interpretations and beliefs.
Know the Moon’s cycles.
Take notice if growth and opportunities appear in your life as it waxes; versus challenges appearing as it wanes?
Pay attention to the details of the spin…
If you focus on how you interact with the physical world and the astronomical world, you might find some of the answers you seek…
