What the Heck Is A LongTail Keyword? Why You Should Care!

Why Would You use a Long Tail Keyword?

LongTail keywords are simply groups of words used as a keyword for a blog post instead of a single word.

The top ten keywords on my site right now all have at least two words, while the highest number of visitors come from a three word phrase, and the phrase providing the lowest bounce rate AND the highest amount of time on the blog is five words long.

What does this mean for you and your blog?  It’s great news for me because I blog about self-improvement, philosophy, the process of writing and the process of blogging.  All of these genres are inundated with bloggers already, so how do I get my stuff found over and above everyone else?

I use Long Tail keywords…

Benefits of Long Tail keywords:

”Here are four main reasons why you should consider optimizing your website for long tails:

  • Long tail keywords lead to higher conversions. Visitors arriving through multi-phrase search queries might be more likely to make purchases or convert on affiliate programs or recommendations. By targeting these longtail phrases, you are effectively targeting a market of potential buyers.
  • Long tail Keywords are Easier to rank. It is much easier to make your website rank well on search engines for longtail keywords because of the generally weaker competition.
  • More Visitors to your website. Targeting long tail keywords will gradually lead to more search engine traffic because you’ll have a lot of pages indexed and ranking for specific phrases related to your website/business. This means increased visibility and therefore a much larger amount of search engine traffic.
  • Higher monetization potential. Search engine visitors are very valuable because they are targeted individuals who are seeking specific information and hence are more likely to click on contextual ads or subscribe to your site newsletter or blog feed. This grows your audience and allows you greater monetization potential in the long run through product sales or the use of third-party ad networks.”

People searching within these very particular genres usually use longer strings of search words because they realize the futility of a one word search on ‘meditation’ or ‘reincarnation’.

So, experienced searchers would use longtail keywords like ‘transcendental meditation techniques videos’ or ‘Buddhist reincarnation book’.

My book is a study of the powerful knowledge hidden within modern clichés and phrases, and some of these clichés and phrases are the long tail keywords people are using to find my blog!   The phrase with the most visits today is ‘thoughts affect matter’

After realizing that, I added all the clichés and phrases from the book into the blog keywords list, as well as variants like ‘thoughts affect matter’.

This has obviously been paying off!
