As a fairly newbie blogger, I’m still looking for ways to enhance my blog or highlight any posts/comments I might leave on other blogs.
You probably know what an avatar is, where you choose a little picture or graphic which represents you when posting on forums or websites. In my experience these avatars are web-site specific; you have to create a new one for each site you visit.
I’ve noticed that some people leaving comments on my blog have photos of themselves that appear as an avatar when they post. I’ve also noticed this same avatar follows them around from blog to blog. I found the WordPress theme settings, where you choose what type of avatars WP uses for comments, but I couldn’t figure out how to ‘personalize’ mine.
Today I learned about Gravatars thanks to Jack Humphey’s Friday Traffic Report! Go to www.gravatar.com and you can set one up for free! Or at least I think it’s free. When I landed on their page, it recognized my WordPress log-in and I just had to add a password and upload a photo.
It has a pretty cool cropping tool, so even large photos, where you might be one of many faces, can be used and you just crop it down to your face.
As soon as the Gravatar was uploaded and created, all of my previous comment posts on WP were populated with the Gravatar instantly! You can also install WP plug-ins which allows you to manage Gravatars and other Open-ID solutions too.
If you are blogging (and more importantly) commenting on blogs, then you should get your Gravatar set up today!
