In a previous post, I described how I was increasing the visitors to my blog, from sources other than the search engines, by using techniques suggested by various blogging gurus including Problogger and Copyblogger. As it seems to be a popular past, I thought I would do a follow up on my stats now.
It all starts with the basics. If you do any web-search regarding getting people to your blog, you’ll probably find three basic techniques suggested:
- Create great content!
- Get your blog out there with proper SEO and keywords!
- Communicate with other bloggers and online communities!
That previous SEO post has been well read for one reason; it was picked up by SEOarticleexpert, with 34 referral clicks in the past 30 days. So suggestion #1 certainly works!
I’m now five months into the blog, and feel like it’s starting to get some legs. My average readers per day have doubled and comments are starting to appear.
In the past 30 days I’ve had 366 visits, which is a paltry sum to some, but gold to me!
51% have been from search engines
27% from referring sites
17% from direct traffic
14% from a new category named ‘other’ (In Google analytics, ‘other’ includes Twitter and Feedburner)
So out of 366 visitors, 181 have come through direct visits, or various referral sites where I’ve either posted or interacted with the readers in some way. Suggestion #3 also is working!
The SEO/keywords suggestion, while making the most sense, seems to be the most difficult to track. After posting a comment on Blogigs, asking about how best to learn about keywords, Costa offered a link to The Keyword Academy, where you can join for a $1 trial period, to learn a bit more about how best to use these tools.
My point is that the two fastest growing areas for new visitors to my blog has been from creating content and outbound communication.
Even for a newbie blogger, with no technical skills, you can also improve the number of visitors landing on your site by following these simple rules!
Write On!
PS
I’ve had 5 new visitors while writing this post…all from search engines, so suggestion#2 is working too…;)
