Take the Money and Run – A Man Named Salvador

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I’m on holiday in New Zealand, and having lived here eight years ago, it’s wonderful to return to the land of the long white cloud.  But it was an experience we had, while waiting in line to get processed into the country, which I’d like to share with you.

Our plane landed at midnight, along with three other planes, so the lines to get through customs were quite long and we stood in line for about two hours.   In front of us was a group of very attractive people who we thought were South American by their language.

The group had a female translator who was Australian, and we inquired as to what they were doing in New Zealand?

She explained they were a troop of Capoeira performers, pronounced “cap-owe-where-ah,”, and we learned they were on a local publicity tour to promote their upcoming Australasian tour.  So I asked if I could get their autographs as a way of lightening an otherwise long and boring wait.  They all laughed, and offered me written hugs and kisses, and a few other things I couldn’t translate.

After a few more laughs, the guide began to tell us some of their personal stories.  One of the young men, named Salvador, had recently won $10,000 on a local Brazilian television show.  It seems this talented man, who was less than five feet in height, could do thirty-two back-hand springs in less than thirty seconds!

When he heard the translator referring to his capabilities, he grinningly came over and showed us a recording of the TV show on his Ipod.  It was obvious he was a very talented gymnast and fiercely proud of his capabilities.

The unbelievable part of the story was that after he won the contest, he actually had to move himself and his family away from his small town, because the local gang knew he had won the money.  Had he not taken the money and ran, he and his family would either have been killed by this local gang, or extorted until the gang had acquired all the cash.

So the next time you feel like you are getting a raw deal, or are not receiving the support from your community which you think you deserve, please remember Salvador; the Brazilian man who had to take the money and run to save he and his family’s lives.
