Excerpt from The Hidden Power of Language
“The phrase, ‘Hold That Thought’, should now be read and understood in a completely different context.
When I first heard the phrase ‘thoughts are things’, I didn’t get it. We’ve all been brought up to believe that what we think is a secret between us and the Cosmic Soup.
We believe that our thoughts are only known to us, and there is no way that thoughts could have an effect on external matter.
Before we consider that argument though, we need to define exactly what a ‘thought’ is. Modern science has allowed us to do this, using some very intriguing imaging tools such as MRI and fMRI scanners.
Without going into a long review of the research, we have proved that thoughts are electromagnetic waves just like visible light and ultra-violet rays.
In fact there are four primary types of brain waves, with each displaying a very specific frequency range:
Beta Waves – (14 – 40Hz)
Alpha Waves – (8-14Hz)
Theta Waves – (4-7Hz)
Delta Waves – (0.1 – 4Hz)4
Research has shown we spend the bulk of our waking time thinking primarily in the beta range, and when we meditate we begin to slow down to a state of generating predominately alpha waves. This state equates to the level we achieve just before going to sleep or waking up, known as the hypnogogic state.
Most modern philosophers agree it is when we are in this state of generating primarily alpha waves that we are in alignment with the power of intention.
Practiced meditators can actually bring their primary mental activity down to the level of theta waves. This is equivalent to a state of deep, restful sleep.
There is, however, a mysterious fifth type of brain wave as proven by Richard Davidson in 1992. “
